Mid-century chair and AIRCARE tower in a room with a wooden cabinet and plant. Text: "Random Acts of Kindness. What does kindness mean?"

This past week was the celebration of Random Acts of Kindness. AIRCARE asked you to share your thoughts with us about what kindness means to you. The response was overwhelming, and we are very grateful for all of you who participated with us! We were touched as we read your comments, and we certainly hope others enjoyed them as much as we did. Our winner was chosen at random from all of the comments, and she graciously allowed us to share her story with you.

Her name is Savannah Valencia. Her son Victor is obsessed with performing random acts of kindness each and every day. He makes survival bags for law enforcement, he takes snacks to fire stations, and he collects donations of treats and toys for the animals at his local humane society. Outside of helping worthy causes, Victor also surprises everyday people with flowers or free coffee, he has paid off past due school lunch balances, and he even took popsicles to highway workers in his neighborhood. The list goes on and on.

We love to read about Victor’s story because it highlights the same themes that all of you shared with us about what kindness means to you:

  • Kindness means doing something for another person and having no expectations of anything in return. This person could be a stranger, a friend, a family member, or any member of the community. Just doing something nice for the sake of doing something nice.

  • Small things equal big kindness. A lot of you mentioned how an act as easy as holding the door open for someone you encounter during the day or simply smiling at someone can improve their day. Remember when you smile, you feel better, too.

  • We do not know what someone else may be going through. It is easy to get caught up in our own lives or our own problems. Treating other people with empathy and leaving judgment at the door is a great way to show kindness and to help someone who may be struggling or in need.

  • Remember back in grade school when you were taught the Golden Rule: always treat others as you would wish to be treated. Simple, easy, and free!

  • Whatever you chose to do to show kindness to someone else, a coworker, a child, a dog, or a stranger, when you do it from the heart it can make all of the difference in the world.

That is the great thing about Victor’s story. He is one small person in a very large world. He does not let that affect his determination to improve the lives of those around him. Through his daily kindness, Victor’s community is a better place. Thank you to Victor and to his mother Savannah for sharing their story.
