What the Funk?

A humidifier is on a background of half dirty water and half clean water. Text reads: What the Funk? How to keep your humidifier so fresh and so clean.

Have you ever noticed a pink residue inside your humidifier? Or maybe a fine white dust around it? Or an unpleasant smell? Wondering what’s causing it and how to stop it? With a few simple habits, you can kick the funk to the curb.

Every Breath You Take

For evaporative units, AIRCARE SuperWicks® provide better moisture output while helping keep the air clean as it humidifies. If your wick looks discolored, stiff or clogged, it’s time for a replacement. We recommend changing your wick every 30-90 days.

Adding our Essick Air bacteriostatic treatment to your evaporative units will help control

bacteria, mold and algae before they take hold. You only need to use 1 teaspoon per gallon of water.

No matter what type of humidifier you use (evaporative, steam or ultrasonic), if you live in an area with mineral-rich water, using distilled water instead of tap water is ideal for minimizing buildup and eliminating “humidifier dust.” You can also use our demineralization cartridges on many of our units to trap impurities and prevent them from being released into the air.

Text reads: AIRCARE MISTBUSTERS on a background of mist.

FACT: You can use tap water in your humidifier; however, additional use of wicks, and demineralization cartridges removes minerals and reduces buildup — leaving the air you breathe and your humidifier even cleaner.

Take it a step further and use an AIRCARE air filter to trap airborne particles and allergens, such as dust, pet dander and mold.

Don’t Let It Go!

Ideally, you should clean your unit weekly. Start by turning your humidifier off and unplugging it. Remove the unit’s components and water.

Fill the pour-in reservoir or removable tanks halfway with fresh water and add 1 cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for 20 minutes. For disinfecting, replace the vinegar with 1 teaspoon of bleach — never mix vinegar and bleach.

After soaking, use a soft sponge dampened with vinegar to wipe down the cabinet interior and bottles, then rinse thoroughly. For disinfecting, use diluted bleach instead of vinegar on interior surfaces only — again, never mix vinegar and bleach.

Dry everything completely and replace the components.

So Fresh and So Clean

Looking to freshen up the room? Add a light and refreshing scent to your home or office with our humidifier fragrances. Inspired by nature, our fragrances include fresh lemon, ocean breeze and menthol eucalyptus.

Simply the Best

Several of our AIRCARE models can use SuperWicks, bacteriostatic treatment, demineralization cartridges, air filters and fragrances:
