A Brief History of Humidifiers

Humidifiers have been around for as long as we have. Natural humidifiers, such as those from waterfalls or especially thermal waters, have been enjoyed the same way some modern spas use hot springs to pamper their guests. Ancient Greeks like Hippocrates, who is known for the Hippocratic oath, were aware of the therapeutic use of water – particularly in the use of steam to humidify baths. This practice was continued with ancient Roman baths where humidity was controlled in sauna-like rooms with dry heat and humid heat. AIRCARE offers many steam humidifiers that work much in the same way.

Leonardo da Vinci, who painted the Mona Lisa, also invented an early hygrometer, a device used to measure humidity. Today, that same principle is used in modern devices such as AIRCARE’s digital hygrometer, which monitors humidity and temperature. It features a comfort display with icons, and also has a wall mount or table stand option.

Humidifiers are still used for personal comfort and rejuvenation, and for the conservation of art, wood floors and musical instruments. There are now a variety of humidifiers available:

  1. Steam humidifiers

Steam humidifiers use a heating element to heat water to produce moisture in the air. Our AIRCARE steam humidifiers offer a medicinal cup to place essential oils or medicated vaporizing liquids that infuse the air with a warm, soothing mist.

  2. Evaporative humidifiers

Using an evaporative process, evaporative humidifiers draw dry air through a moistened wick, releasing cool, hydrated air into your space. AIRCARE’s low-maintenance design and adjustable settings make it easy to create a refreshing environment.

  3. Ultrasonic humidifiers

Ultrasonic humidifiers make use of ultrasonic vibrations to atomize water, producing a fine, cool mist. These ultra-quiet humidifiers can be compact, making them excellent for offices, nurseries and other environments where silence is appreciated. AIRCARE has a variety of styles to match any décor.

From ancient steam baths and da Vinci’s early innovations to today’s advanced technology, humidification has evolved to meet modern needs. This means you can breathe easier and enjoy a healthier atmosphere — transform your space with an AIRCARE® humidifier!

Industry-wide surveys are only useful when the questions are specific enough to act on, and this one seems to focus on profit structure and platform shifts rather than vague sentiment. If you want to compare your own assumptions against a broader sample, the forward-looking industry survey is worth reading with a notebook open. Pay attention to how the questions are framed, since that shapes what the answers can actually tell you.

Thank you for this fascinating look at the history of humidification! I had no idea that Hippocrates and the ancient Romans were already harnessing the power of steam, and learning that da Vinci invented an early hygrometer was a wonderful surprise. It’s amazing to see how these ancient practices and early innovations have evolved into the modern, stylish, and quiet options we have today. This really makes me appreciate my AIRCARE unit so much more!
